Anime North 2004 |
A Kikiwai Co. Con Report By: Sakura
This was the first time I've ever gone to Anime
North, but I did know it was different from the conventions in the past. For what reason? Because
half of the events took place in the Toronto Congress Centre while the other half took place in the
Renaissance hotel. There were free shuttles between the two places, but hardly enough to go around for
everyone and many opted to walk instead, despite the occasional rain and downpour that occurred over
the weekend. To tell you the truth, having events happening in two different places that were sort of close but
not really wasn't the best idea in the world. A lot of time was wasted just commuting back and forth.
Cosplayers were numerous and while even obscure series were represented, the heavy favourites this year
seemed to be Naruto and Inuyasha. I couldn't look anywhere without seeing at least one Naruto or
Inuyasha character. ^_^* Yours truly had also cosplayed, but she's learned from experience now that
it's bad to choose a costume that will hinder your mobility (even if that's just plain walking from
point A to point B). =P Photoshoots took place everywhere and if you were in the right place at the
right time, you just might have seen one or two of them.
From the few times I was there, the dealer's room was always busy and always filled with people. As I'm
rather (ahem) short, I never really did get to see much of the various shops set up, though there was a
DDR machine of sorts set up there. There was also a variety of shops there from those that sold
Chinese/Japanese clothing and accessories, to one that sold hand-sewn sushi, to even our own store. =)
You can find just about anything in the dealer's room, except for maybe food and water. ^_^*
To be honest, I attended few events at this convention. However, I enjoyed pretty much most of the
events I did go to. The masquerade had many entries and lasted far longer than it was originally
supposed to. The blackout before it didn't help very much. Much of the entries was enjoyable and worth
the wait. Atsuko Enomoto (known for her roles as Misaki in Angelic Layer and Yukino in Kare Kano), one
of the Japanese guests, received many hugs and signed many autographs during one of her Q&A sessions,
and the mBrosia concert was a lot of fun. ^_^
Perhaps my only complaint, aside from the commute between two locations, would be that the convention
didn't really seem to be organized as well as it could.
Oh, well, maybe next year. =)
We present to you some of the many cosplayers at this year's Anime North.
